Komische oper in Berlin resumes its intriguing new Orlando in September with all but two roles performed by the female singers. The stage director Alexander Mørk-Eidem decided to have his women performers in male roles sing as women, and went one up by femming up one of them (Medoro). He also camped out (in both senses of the word camp) in lesbian subcultures of camping and wilderness ranging. Good reviews abound — cf. Opera (June 2010) and Opera Now (May/June 2010). Photos here.
Back in March, Angers-Nantes Opéra staged a rarely performed Mozart opera Lucio Silla, which he wrote as a teenager. Mezzo Paola Gardina was a remarkable Cecilio. Apart from this video reportage, I couldn’t find any clips from the performance itself, but let’s hear Monica Bacelli as Cecilio in a 2006 Salzburg production:
Most fuss was made, however, about a local grrl breaking internationally, the extraordinaire coloratur canadienne de 33 ans Jane Archibald. She will be performing in Toronto at the COC next year as Zerbinetta with Pieczonka in the role of Ariadne and Alice Coote as the Composer. But of that you will be hearing a lot in these pages.
