Almost 60% of professional musicians have suffered from mental health problems

…and almost half have experienced problems with alcohol, according to a survey by Help Musicians UK. “Money problems and work insecurity cause almost as much concern as anti-social hours”:

The report states that many have found the available NHS help inadequate and have sought private health care. I have no idea what freelancers in Canada (or the US) do since our medicare does not include psychological care and preventive medicine and only the workers in jobs with medical benefits have access to those through the employer’s benefits plan.

  1. Technically OHIP does cover psychiatric care but in practice the best you are going to get unless you are a paranoid schizophrenic is a few CBT sessions with a grad student. Most private plans aren’t much help either as you’ll max out the annual therapy amount in four or five visits.
