Canadian Stage now staging contemporary opera too

Really good news coming from Canadian Stage, which announced its 15/16 season today. Philippe Boesmans‘ opera Julie (libretto by Luc Bondy, based on Strindberg) will be directed by Matthew Jocelyn himself in the Bluma Appel in about a year’s time. To be conducted by Leslie Dala, but no info yet about the cast. The 2005 Aix-en-Provence production had Malena Ernman in the title role.

The staging will be a co-pro between the Canadian Stage and Soundstreams with support from the Théâtre d’Orléans in France.

I’ve been liking where Jocelyn’s been taking Canadian Stage since he was appointed Artistic Director, especially his openness to inviting ‘other’ theatrical forms into the theatre house–music, dance, film and finally now opera. This door is now finally open and I can see CC becoming one of the significant venues for showing contemporary opera in cutting edge productions.

A little bit more info on CC’s Julie here (keep scrolling).
